Camelback Academy is a Project CHILD school; CHILD is an acronym meaning "Changing How Instruction for Learning is Delivered."  Project CHILD was created in 1988 by Dr. Sally Butzin from Florida State University and the Institute for School Innovation; it is a research-based and data-driven teaching methodology for grades K-5 focused on teaching specific content areas in a unique and engaging child-centered learning environment.  CHILD classrooms look and operate differently than traditional classrooms and the outcomes are extraordinary!

CHILD is a 3-dimesional model:

  1. Grade levels are broken down into clusters, k-2 clusters and 3-5 clusters.  Within the cluster, there are 3 teachers who are responsible for the core subject areas; a reading teacher, a math teacher, and a writing teacher.  Science and Social Studies are integrated throughout the core subject areas.

The teachers only teach the one content area to students in grades K-2 or    3-5.  The classrooms are not combination classes; they work with specific grade levels separately.  The students are in each classroom for a 90-minute block every day.
  2. The "loop."  The teachers work with the same students for 3 years.
  3. Learning Stations - after a new concept or unit is introduced through direct instruction, students work independently at three types of learning stations in their classroom.

    Each classroom has a
Computer Station for technology-based work, a Textbook Station for paper/pencil work, and three Activity Stations for hands-on work. There is also a Teacher Station where teachers can pull students for small group tutorials and individual assistance.
